I just happen to like it all - they're old stuff is great, they're new stuff is great - it's just different, and I don't get why people want their music to stay the same - if it stayed the same, there'd be no reason to listen anymore. And I think it's actually pretty cool to see how their image is progressing - it keeps it interesting, and I don't get them confused w/american bands simply of how different they sound compared to whats here. With all the different 'sounds' now, it's just easier to find the exact diru song that fits my mood. I wanna be scary and somewhat upbeat, i'll listen to 'I'll' or 'Joker' - I wanna be pissy, we've got Obscure.
GAAAAAH - stupid angry fans!! or anti-fans!! whatever they are! variety is a GOOD THING!!

I like some songs from their old stuff, and some from their new stuff. Therefore, I still like Dir en grey! ^^ I wasn't overly keen on Clever Sleazoid - I didn't think it was bad, just that they could do better - but hey, that's just one single! It doesn't mean they are doomed to turn out shitty music from now on! -_-
I can see there is a bit more variety on their older stuff, for instance contrasts between loud and quiet, hard and soft, fast and slow etc. etc... (both between the songs and within individual songs) which is not really evident on Withering to Death... but again, that's just one album (and taking it as a stand-alone it's a pretty good album) so I wouldn't become to dislike Diru's music on the strength of it.
I think it's good for bands to change... evolve their music, do different things, rather than getting stuck in a rut... of course, that means they will lose some older fans and gain some newer ones, and I wouldn't necessarily expect to like every single thing a band puts out... but I would rather hear them progressing, even if it's in a direction I personally don't like as much. And with Dir en grey, I don't dislike their direction at the moment... not to say I will like them forever... just have to wait and see.

This seems to have become a more general discussion topic, so hopefully nobody will mind that I can't answer Matsudayo's question .__. Like I said, it's the fans that are the problem not the band itself. Hurr. But that's just my take on it..... That's exactly how I feel about Dir en grey. They were one of the first Japanese rock bands I had started listening to, but I was quickly scared away by the less than friendly fanbase. Now I'm giving them a second try, but I'm not sure if they're exactly my kind of music. I do like some of their earlier stuff, but I don't really forsee them ever becoming a 'favorite' band of mine. But uhh, I really like the cover art for Gauze and have been thinking of buying the album for nearly a year now just because I think it's pretty XD

Am I the only one who doesn't care about the fanbase? Seriously, they're just a bunch of individuals, some I will like, some I won't, as in any other walk of life. It's never occurred to me to change my attitude to a band because of their fans, even sub-consciously (afaik! XD). I think Diru are a tad overrated on the guitaring side of things but I still really admire their compositions and the emotion in their music. Like I said, I don't like all of their songs, and they aren't my favourite band but I still love 'em. =P

I don't care what people think of me anyway, not preps, not goths, NOT Dir en Grey humpers. If I wanna like the music that's MY bid'nez. e.e.

Like I said, I don't like all of their songs, and they aren't my favourite band but I still love 'em. =P The only reason I think the fanbase scared me off so much is because I usually like to join communities related to bands so I can learn more about them and make friends who like the same music, so when a large portion of the fanbase isn't very friendly it doesn't really make me feel that 'Ooh, I want to do stuff related to this band!' feeling...it gives me that, "Oh dear god run!" feeling instead. That's the best way I can explain it, which is pretty craptacular (and I aplogize for that, I'm pretty tired right now) but basically...if I'm not madly in love with the music of a group I would rather not deal with them at all than put up with lots of unfriendly fans, especially as a 'n00b' .__. But I definitely see your point, I think the only cases where fans have changed my mind about bands are when the fans seem to display a very extreme personality, may it be positive or negative.

To the people that are anti-jrock in the US, they have to stop and think....
In a sense, it's something of an impossibility for J-rock to become fully mainstream like American music does because so many people have the language steryotype. If they can't understand it, it sucks. (i know people like this)
I, for one, enjoyed Withering to Death as much as I enjoy their older music like Kisou and Gauze.
Bands will change as time changes and people have to learn to accept this.
and if at anytime, i've said something stupid...let me know... I've only been into J-rock not even a full year yet. Come August, it'll hvae been a year.
The less-than-friendly-fanbase is one thing i'm kidna nervous about if i go to see Dir en Grey in September... I'm going with two other girls from a nearby city and since we don't wanna end up getting attack by Korn fans (lol, kinda bad to say but i've heard they're vicious at concerts) we're going to dare to hang around the other Diru fans and hope we can find some of the friendlier fanbase. I wanna enjoy myself, not dread I went.
but if it isn;t a concert situation, i don't let fanbase get to me. it's just, being the newbie j-rock fan I am, i wanna find some people that know the ropes at concerts and won't be an asshole to me if I say something wrong or I need help.

Oh, I hope it is ok for you ^^ When I went to MUCC's live, it was my first ever jrock live, but as I was with some friends, I didn't care about the rest of the people there =P but they all seemed quite ok, anyway. ^^ Stuck-up people are annoying -_- And Jrock fans can be just as arsey and elitist as scene kids or anyone else for that matter, if you meet the wrong people -_- I have sometimes thought to myself, just because you like the same sort of music as someone, doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get along, or that you'll like them, or that they'll like you... It would feel good to me, to meet someone who likes Jmusic, so I might get all excited about that! =P but in the end, they might be the most horrible person... just cos they like jmusic, doesn't make them a nice person necessarily... I dunno if I'm making sense. >< Anyway, I hope you will find, that you meet some nice people there. ^^ Me too I've not been into jrock very long... it's just over a year now. Actually a year and a half since I discovered my first jrock song ^^ but I didn't have broadband then, so for a few months all I could download was a few Malice Mizer songs. T_T

Oh I know that feeling. I'm glad I don't have dial-up anymore.
Yes, you made sense with what you were saying. You're not going to get along with someone just bacsue you may like the same type of music although it would be nice to meet other people that do like the same things I do. They seem to be so far and in between though.
Thanks ^,^ this'll be my first j-rock concert if I go.... i'm so excited! i just have to get off my lazy butt and go mow some lawns for cash.

I don't know about the Japanese fans or anything, but I've noticed pretty much anywhere else I go, the 'fans' don't even know the guy's names or which one's which except "Yeah, I think the blonde is hot" then they all get in a huge fight over who's a 'real' fan and who's not. I don't CARE if you've listened to them years before me - if you like the music, you're a fan. then there's those trend followers - if Diru is the popular thing for a year, they like it, then something else comes along and suddenly it's not cool anymore. I have to admit those people really do piss me off. Maybe if they'd try and talk about the MUSIC instead of who knows more, the different fans might not be so hostile. Hell, me and EA don't know the titles to half of their songs, but that doesn't stop us from trying to figure out which one we're talking about, and she's one of those 'You are not worthy to listen to them' types. Usually the super annoying ones that just heard of them are anime fans and jpop fanatics, but as annoying as they can be, they have the potential to be jrock fans too. I just don't get why people make such a big deal about what music you listen to anyway. The only reason any of my friends listen to jrock is because I bring over CDs, and we all get along just fine! And the angry fanbase?.... When I entered into Diru fandom, I didn't talk to anyone really at all, so I didn't have too much contact with them.... then I met EA and she practically bit my head off when she heard I only had two of their CDs. Psycho much?

That's my problem
When i get into a new band, I rarely remember titles until I start liking them more and more. Even now I can;t remember most of the titles to Diru's sonigs and I have to keep referring back to my computer or something.
Know-it-all leadist people get on my nerves more than anything. They tick me off so bad, thinking that they're more of a fan just because they know more about the band. Grr ><;;;
My biggest pet peeve, as Mizer Manakins was saying, is the people that only like a band because they're a trend or because they think the guys are hot. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE MUSIC DON'T CALL YOURSELF A FAN!!!!!!!!!!! You should like a band for their talent, not their looks! I mean, if the guys are nice-looking, that's a plus, but it isn;t what you should base your entire opinion on!!!
Not all of my friends listen to j-rock music and I don't expect them to. We're all individuals, and whatever music we like is our choice. I have friends who like rap music--which i despise-- but you don't see me bashing on them because of it! People are allowed to have differences of opinions, contrary to the popular belief of the teenage population in Northeast Ohio.

That's kinda one of the reasons I'm not exactly thrilled that Hot Topic is like the ONLY place that's selling Withering to Death, because a lot of people who shop there (and I have frequent experiences with these people) ONLY shop there and are trying to fit a certain label, trying to be a certain way and shop at Hot Topic because they think it makes them cool. And they buy the new stuff that's there because they think it makes them unique. When it really doesn't. Does that make any sense? Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Hot Topic, I'm just kind of mad that it's the ONLY place that actually stocks it. >.<

You should like a band for their talent, not their looks! I mean, if the guys are nice-looking, that's a plus, but it isn;t what you should base your entire opinion on!!! Try telling that to most of the visual-kei fanbase. We can bitch and complain all we want, but there are ALWAYS going to be people mostly attracted to the look. That's what visual-kei is. Because it's totally obvious that Vk musicians hate it when they have to get dressed in make up and gay outfits every night just to have girls (...and guys) flailing over them while they are trying to play their mediocer music. I don't get them confused w/american bands simply of how different they sound compared to whats here. I think recently (Vulgar - now) their sound is really "western" nu-metal-ish. Musicly, their songs are a lot like KoRn's (freak coincidence? :0 :0). Obscure = KoRn. Their new single just sounds like another dead tree and nothing really impressive. I like their older stuff a ton more. There was no one like them. Closest thing I've ever heard was some sucky reject Matina band. Lol, I just remember like 5 years ago when liking a Japanese metal band that dressed up like woman was stupid. Now you can buy it at Hot Topic.

I actually like having their stuff at Hot Topic... it's cheaper and easier to buy.

I actually like having their stuff at Hot Topic... it's cheaper and easier to buy. I don't mind having it there, it's just the people that shop there that are posers. (I'm not saying that people who shop there are posers, it's just that a lot of people who are posers shop there) And I just listened to Korn while driving around with my roommate. Extremely loudly. And. . . . . . ummmm, I see no parallels between them. They're so different, even Diru's newer stuff. O.o Juh. Not with me. Korn is all bass and rhythm-heavy, and more thinly orchesrtrated, and Diru is more thickly orchestrated with a richer sound and a bit less dependent on riffs. And much more variety in the vocals. DUDE. On the subject of fan-ness . . . This is one of my favorite things. Ever. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP_OUdONRC8LMFAO Kie-yo, Tashya and Shine-ya! *snorts* I'm happy now. ZOMFG FAMILY VALUES TOMORROW. Or today rather. We're baking a Diru cake right now. ^.^
