I have never really liked this genre until lately. I'm still not too interested in alot of stuff. I've never liked this band Dir En Grey, but they have a few songs I've found extremely enjoyable, and I can't stop listening to "Yokan".
The rest of their music seems pretty dark and sporadic compared to this song. Is there any other J-rock or Visual Kei out there that is more in the style of that specific song?
I've been listening to a few bands, but I can't find anything that comes very close.
"Yokan" has this insanely happy sound to it, while still sounding a bit melacholy. It also has an epic quality to it. It has a fast tempo, and it's melodic and catchy. These are some of the things I am looking for. I also like how it pretty much keeps speed up the entire song, and doesn't slow down completely for the verses and such.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me find stuff like this!

I've never liked this band Dir En Grey *humps your leg* err anyway. I know how you feel kiddo but never fear, the VST crew is here. Here is a tiny questionare I've come up with to help find a band/style you might like. 1) What style do you like, give examples. 2) What american bands do you like? 3) What styles do you hate 4) Which part of the band do you most connect with (synth, vocals, guitar ect) and we'll work from there. Also if you haven't visited the main site please do so, I have a ton of err "Sample" songs uploaded so you can get an idea of what bands sound like.

I wasn't aware of the main site. I was linked here by an aquaintance. He's really kind of introduced me to J-rock, and I'm slowly going through a small list of bands he's suggested, so I should be able to tell you what I'm looking for better in a couple of days.
I'll do your quiz, but be warned that I'm somewhat of a music extremist, and most of my favorite bands are not going to be recognizeable by people who aren't as deep into the genres and scenes as I am.
1) What style do you like, give examples. ---> I am currently into a lot of hardcore punk, punk, and pop-punk. I dabble in other genres, but they are usually very aggresive forms of music. I'm also really big into jazz, but that's for the technical skill of the music, not so much for the sound. The sound I'm looking for doesn't really seem to be very punk/metal related.
2) What american bands do you like? ---> CIV, Minor threat, Gorilla Biscuits, Set Your Goals, Daggermouth, Shelter, Against Me!, Good Clean Fun, Kid Dynamite
3) What styles do you hate ---> I don't really hate any genre of music, except for "gangster" rap. All genres seem to have their good qualities, and their bad. I'm not very fond of alot of electronic music though.
4) Which part of the band do you most connect with (synth, vocals, guitar ect) ---> Well, really, it's the overall sound. It's the way the music can make me feel. That song, "Yokan", has this strangely epic feel to it, and still makes you want to get up and dance and move to it. I'm not really into dance music or anything. I'm a jazz student, so good piano and guitar will always intrigue me to some degree. i guess I need something that's kind of fast as well. Good tempo and beat is always a plus. Interesting drumming alone sets me in another world sometimes.
Also, I like the few songs I've heard from X Japan, but it's been a long time since I gave them a listen. I knew about them long before I even knew Visual Kei was a genre. Perhaps I will try them out again.
Hmm, I'm finding myself fond of the song "Cage" by Dir En grey as well. I don't like the slow verses. The chorus is beautiful though.

Yes, yes most people don't matriculate here from the main site so here's the link: www.vspider.empty-tears.net/newdex.html . I hope I represented each band well in the songs, but it can often be hard to sum up any band in 2 or 3 songs. A few personal suggestions that I think you might also like would be: X Japan, Sex Machineguns, The Mad Capsule Markets, Metronome, Merry (I'd highly reccomend Merry), and just for the hell of it The Michelle Gun Elephant.

Thank you for the reccomendations. I really enjoy merry and X Japan judging by the samples I found. A few of those I will have to find elsewhere, since there are no samples for them.
I went through the samples, and these are the groups I found most sounded like what I'm looking for:
Camui Gackt (mainly that first sample, "Mizerable") Hanamuke Janne da Arc (mainly the second sample, "Hysteric Moon") Kagrra L'arc en Ciel (the first sample, "Lover Boy") Luna Sea
Oh, and I really Moi Dix Mois, even though it's not nearly what I was searching for.
Maybe this list would help some? =S

It seems that J-rock bands have widely varying sounds, so it's going to be hard to find a single band that has very many songs sounding similar. Maybe suggestions of single songs like "Yokan" would work as well.

Well, I'm only one resourse here, once the others wake up I'm sure they'll be able to help you too ^^ Glad you like Merry, they're one of the better "new" bands out there.

Personally, here is what I would recommend for you to try, as well as the suggestions here already:
MUCC (great compositional skills and really kick-ass basslines, especially in their most recent stuff!) Penicillin (I'm not so keen on their slower songs, but the upbeat ones are fantastic!) Kagerou Galneryus (for hot guitar solos) Balzac D'espairsRay Ribbon (great bass)
... and, uhh, that'll do for now! ^^

The main problem with Japanese bands is that they DO NOT work from album to ablum, they work from song to song. So one song will be hard metal, the next fruity pop, the next sincere ballad, the next death metal. Like a box of musical chocolates haahaa. Its very rare to have a band that's consistant in thier sound these days.

Oi, I didn't realize this thread was here!! ZOMG XD hehe. Hrm....."Yokan-ish"......I'm not sure about "Yokan-ish" but I can recommend some random bands that I find people new to Jrock tend to like: -Nightmare/Naitomea: They're new-ish and although some songs are similar to DeG, they have a great range of musical style. Listen to Nazuki then Raven Loudspeeeker. Can't believe they're on the same single XD -Despairs Ray: Hardcore songs and mostly dark visual kei. I'm loving it and some may recognize that they preformed here in the States recently. -X Japan: Nuff said. -Ellegarden: Sounds almost like an american band, but they're billingual! Heehee, most of their songs are oddly emo-sounding....maybe it's the chord structure (or lack there of?) That's all I can come up with for now. Not all of these are my personal favorites but it's good to give em a try

I'm awake! And stirring.
What's so great about some of these groups represented here on the site is that their styles vary throughout the years. Example... Gackt. Usually almost everybody can find one style of his that they can get into. It's just a matter of finding that style.
Dir En Grey is that way too (I favor DEG). Their music is so diverse, there's usually always something for everyone... the problem with that though is that sometimes you can't find your "something" in any type of group.
Anyway,
X-Japan Penicillin (Older stuff) Lucy
You said you like Moi Dix Moi, so maybe look into Malice Mizer (older group, no longer together... but same establishment).
I also really reccoment HIGH AND MIGHTY COLOR (haikara).

If you're into happy-jazzy stuff then check out SID. Try merry/merii too.. they're not "happy" but they're jazzy.
and THE BACK HORN! >:0
If you're into punk, check out THE STALIN and Balzac like RIGHT NOW. XD

I'm into punk and jazz, but the stuff I liked about the songs I heard wasn't really punkish or jazzy.
I will go heck out the bands everybody's mentioed though. ^^
Bands do seem to be very diverse, so it's going to be hard to find a single band that sounds like what I want. =(

aha. so you've gotten into old Dir en grey? I'd recommend some of their other older "classics" such as GARDEN, I'll, JEALOUS, Unknown...Despair...A Lost.., YURAMEKI (poppish. very nice) and the ballad Aint Afraid to Die.
As for other bands with a punk/jazz feel, I can't recommend bands specifically since (yes I'm repeating it) theyre so diverse, but I can recommend certain songs.
Zakurogata no Yuutsu - Gazette (jazzy) Incident - 12012 (the music is just so gosh darn cantchy) dear...from xxx - Due le quartz (again, catchy.) Wild Wild Summer - Flipper's Guitar ( theyre a fun band) (A+B)No.0-QT? - Imitation PoPz Uchuu Sentai NOIZ (theyre techno-y but also very fun) Honey Vanity - Kozi (quirky) Sky Love #1.5 - Lab. (mellow-y. exvocalist of cali=gari is in this band if I'm not mistaken) Lillie Charlotte - Lareiene (reminds me of old Dir en grey but more French-y) PURPLE SKY - Pierrot (poppish) peko-crash-trap - Vidoll (screamy. not really *punk* persay but theyre nice.) Hatsukoi - Ancafe (Antique Cafe, Ancafe, Antic Cafe, theres a lot of spellings. this band is generally pop-punk/rock.) Plastic Wings - Oblivion Dust (they are old, their vocalist is only half japanese but this is also kind of poppish)
since you wanna try new stuf: yume izuru chi - Kagrra (traditioinal japanese-y sound. it flows) izayoi no tsuki - Kozi (instrumental, classical gothicy. not something you listen to alone at night in the dark) Vision of you - rentrer en soi (vocalist takes a bit of getting used to but his voice is b-e-a-utiful) Drone - Xenophobia (their vocalist is someone I know personally so theres a plug hehehe. theyre an up and coming indie band, their sound is much like MUCC/Merrii. )
by the way, I have all these songs, hit me up on AIM or MSN any time and I'll send them over =D

Sounds like you more or less listened to the same genre as me before I really got into jrock. Haven't heard of the bands you listed, but I'm crazy.
In any case, I started off with Luna Sea and Siam Shade. After a while, I moved onto Janne da Arc because Luna Sea made me sad and Siam Shade's stuff all sounded the same after a while (much like punk, in my opinion, only Siam Shade did more soloing).
Luna Sea and Siam Shade are both older bands, but you might like them. If your transition from American music to Japanese is anything like mine, you'll like what you hear. Or not. I'm crazy.
Janne da Arc is... Everywhere. With the huge variety they provide, you're sure to found something in there that you like (you already have as a matter of fact).
